Nunez ends the story by running away from the people he sought to colonise, so if this is what we view the story as representing, his imperial venture is a resounding failure. Of course, if we analysed the story as a sort of allegory for imperialism, we would have no choice but to conclude that the story represents an example of ‘tall poppy syndrome’ – where an arrogant person is cut down to size. The story might be viewed as a warning about the dangers of colonialism, with Nunez thinking himself superior to the blind because he comes from mainstream ‘civilisation’ and they do not have the same knowledge and view of the world as he does. Like all of Wells’s best fiction, ‘The Country of the Blind’ is packed full with symbolic meaning, but it’s not easy to see what meaning or interpretation we are supposed to take from it. The story ends with him lying ‘peacefully contented’ under the stars when night comes. So he leaves the village and begins the long climb up the mountains so that he might escape the Country of the Blind and get back to Bogota and civilisation. ![]() He agrees to this reluctantly, but when the day arrives for the operation to be carried out, he finds he cannot go through with it, so much does his sight mean to him. ![]() ![]() To understand what’s going wrong in various forms of heart disease, “first we need to know what is normal,” says Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Christine Seidman, a cardiovascular geneticist at Harvard University and director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The researchers examined six regions in 14 healthy donor hearts, creating a detailed database that provides a new basis of comparison for studying heart disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. Now a team of scientists has created the first atlas of human heart cells, a collection of maps showing nearly half a million heart cells and identifying the role of each in the heart’s symphony. Like an orchestra, thousands of cells have to master their individual performances as well as work together. Though we barely notice it most of the time, the steady beating of a human heart is an amazingly complex performance. A new cell atlas reveals this protein and others in different heart cells’ locations. In these beating human heart cells, scientists have highlighted a protein important in muscle contraction (green). ![]() ![]() After getting to know each other, the two become great friends, choosing to be roommates for three of the four years of their boarding school experience. ![]() When Lee meets Martha, she is shocked by Martha's patience and willingness to break the barrier that she has constructed over her first year at Ault. In effect, she proceeds as if the past five hundred years were a relatively trivial interval in the annals of human motivation. She knows that what gives fiction its vitality is not the accurate detail but the animate one, and that novelists are creators, not coroners, of the human case. Where much historical fiction gets entangled in the simulation of historical authenticity, Mantel bypasses those knots of concoction, and proceeds as if authenticity were magic rather than a science. One of the reasons for this literary success is that Mantel seems to have written a very good modern novel, then changed all her fictional names to English historical figures of the fifteen-twenties and thirties. Both this new book and its predecessor, “Wolf Hall,” are mysteriously successful historical novels, a somewhat gimcrack genre not exactly jammed with greatness.
