![]() ![]() ![]() Her abusive family, particularly her sister, allows her to grow up with a very twisted perception of what love actually is. We get to see so much more of Levana's descent into cruelty and madness, and WHY it happens. She really wasn't joking about Cinder's mother! Yikes! I didn't understand her actions, until now that is. I always felt however that Levana's character was a little one-dimensional compared to others. Meyer's 'The Lunar Chronicles' is an extremely inventive series, and what I liked best about it was the way that it used famous fairy tales and turned them into a whole new story. I have been wanting to read Levana's origin story FOR AN AGE. This was another Christmas present to myself, using the money given by family members, and I'm very excited to have finally read it. ![]()

He even owns an unnamed belt of strength (Old Norse megingjarðar) that makes his power doubly formidable when he wears the belt. ![]() His courage and sense of duty are unshakeable, and his physical strength is virtually unmatched. ![]() No one is better suited for this task than Thor. He’s the indefatigable defender of the Aesir gods and their fortress, Asgard, from the encroachments of the giants, who are usually (although far from invariably) the enemies of the gods. ![]() Thor, the brawny thunder god, is the archetype of a loyal and honorable warrior, the ideal toward which the average human warrior aspired. He was a major god of all branches of the Germanic peoples before their conversion to Christianity, although he reached the height of his popularity among the Scandinavians of the late Viking Age. Thor ( Old Norse Þórr, Old English Đunor, Old High German Donar, Proto-Germanic *Þunraz, “Thunder” ) is one of the most prominent figures in Norse mythology. “Thor’s Battle with the Giants” by Mårten Eskil Winge (1872)

But I didn’t get Excuse It, Please! (1936) – and yet, here it is, and that is because Lisa May very, very kindly sent me a copy! That was also in 2015, but every book has its correct moment and, in 2022, Excuse It, Please! found its time had come. When I was in America in 2015, I ordered a whole heap of them to my friend’s apartment – because they’re much easier to find in the US than in the UK. A lot of people know and love Our Hearts Were Young and Gay by Cornelia Otis Skinner and Emily Kimbrough, but fewer people have gone on to discover Cornelia Otis Skinner’s collections of humorous short sketches. ![]() |
